Mayu – The Artisan Reviving Memory Through Fabric

From the quiet beauty of Gifu Prefecture emerges Mayu, a designer whose work bridges tradition and modernity with effortless grace. In 2019, she began with intimate sewing classes at home, but her path soon shifted when voices from her community asked: “Can you help us bring our cherished kimono back into daily life?”

Mayu answered with artistry. Today, she transforms heirloom kimono and obi into bags and accessories that carry memory into the present. Each commission is deeply personal—often a mother’s obi reborn as a handbag, or a relative’s treasured fabric reshaped into something to be held close again.

Her foundation is rigorous: a graduate of fashion design school and a former apparel designer, Mayu commands the full spectrum of creation, from pattern drafting to meticulous sewing. Yet her true gift lies in sensitivity—the ability to read the weave, weight, and rhythm of each textile, and to let its beauty dictate the form it becomes.

For Mayu, kimono and obi are not merely fabrics; they are living works of art, born of Japanese artisans’ devotion. Her mission is to honor that artistry and carry it forward, reimagined for contemporary life. Through pouches crafted from select obis and bags shaped from shibori, she invites us to touch tradition in our everyday moments—quietly, elegantly, and with reverence.

MATSU MINI POUCH

This pattern combines young pine trees (Matsu) abstractly with diamond shapes. The three rounded tips represent new buds. Evergreen trees symbolize longevity and are considered very auspicious because they were regarded as trees growing in an ideal world.

KAME MINI POUCH

Tortoiseshell Pattern. This traditional geometric pattern is reminiscent of a turtle's shell. As the saying goes, "Turtles live for ten thousand years," symbolizing the wish for longevity.

CRANE MINI POUCH

The combination of octagons and squares is called "Shokkōmon." It originated from patterns made in the ancient Shu region of China (during the Three Kingdoms period, in the southwest). The pattern within is called "Mukaitsuru" or "Tsuru-bishi," representing cranes facing each other. This design symbolizes the wish for a long and harmonious life together with one's spouse or partner.

FLORAL MINI POUCH

The 'Hōsōge' (宝相華) is an abstract floral pattern originating in China. It does not represent a specific, real flower but is an imaginary creation that combines the best elements of various flowers, such as peonies and lotuses. This noble motif has a long history and is often used in Buddhist decorations and applied to numerous artifacts in the Shōsōin (the Imperial Repository in Japan).

KIRI MINI POUCH

This is a Paulownia pattern. Paulownia is a fast-growing plant, and the wood is highly prized for its stability, fire resistance, insect resistance, and humidity control (anti-mold) properties. These features made it an expensive material for making furniture and safes. The pattern symbolizes wishes for children's healthy growth and protection from evil. According to Chinese legend, the sacred phoenix resides in the paulownia tree, symbolizing purity and nobility. Like the chrysanthemum, it has been adopted by the Imperial family and court. Even today, it is used as a national emblem and can be seen on the podium of the Prime Minister's official residence and other locations.

SHIMMERING CRANE MINI POUCH

Bundled Noshi Pattern Originally, this motif depicted dried "Noshi Awabi", a type of dried abalone used as an offering to the gods. Over time, it became a symbolic design used in gift wrapping. In Japan, noshi is often seen in the upper right corner of wrapped gifts. The pattern evolved to stylize the elongated shape of the wrapping paper itself.

CHRYSANTHEMUM MINI POUCH

Chrysanthemum Seigaiha Pattern This traditional pattern geometrically stylizes waves. It is one of the oldest classical designs. Here, the circular waves are reimagined as chrysanthemum petals, combining both forms.

PHOENIX & PAULOWNIA MINI POUCH

This design features the sacred phoenix and the paulownia tree, believed to be its dwelling. A fast-growing, fire-resistant wood, paulownia symbolizes growth, protection, and purity. In Chinese legend, the phoenix resides in its branches, linking it to nobility. Used historically by Japan’s imperial family, its crest still appears on government emblems today.

FOLDING FAN MINI POUCH

This design features a variety of motifs arranged within a traditional folding fan. The pair of cranes facing each other symbolize harmony with one’s partner and a wish for enduring bonds. The gosho-guruma—an ox-drawn carriage used by Heian-era nobility—evokes the elegance of classical Japanese court culture and the world of The Tale of Genji. Surrounded by peonies and chrysanthemums, it forms a refined and graceful composition.

BUTTERFLY MINI POUCH

A distinctly Japanese and feminine motif of butterflies and cherry blossoms. As creatures that emerge from cocoons and ascend skyward, butterflies have long symbolized rebirth and mysterious growth. Combined with their visual grace and beauty, this motif has been cherished since ancient times.
